Seeking independent advice

As a parent you can take your own appeal to the Tribunal. However it’s a good idea to seek advice from helplines such as:

The National Autistic Society’s Advocacy for Education service
Tel: 0845 070 4002

The Independent Panel for Special Education Advice
Tel: 0845 602 9579

Sometimes they may offer to represent you free of charge.

Employing a solicitor

If you decide to employ a solicitor to represent you, check the likely cost beforehand. Community Legal Services or the Education Law Association can put you in touch with solicitors and others who represent parents at Tribunal.

Legal aid

Legal aid (free legal support) isn’t available for Tribunals, but low-income families who need help preparing paperwork for an appeal may be entitled to it.

Advice pack for appealing to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal

The Independent Panel for Special Education Advice (IPSEA) has a free downloadable pack (PDF 170KB) for parents whose local authorities have turned down their request for a statutory assessment.
