Autistic Spectrum Disorder: a combined perspective (joint course with The Ear Foundation)

Jack sits in the corner of his living room lining up cars against the wall; he has recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He has a severe hearing loss and the audiologist has told his mum that if he doesn’t wear his hearing aids he won’t learn to talk. Jack’s mum tries every day to put the aids in but Jack just screams and runs away.

The Ear Foundation and Ambitious about Autism have come together to design a day for professionals who face the challenge of supporting children with both a hearing loss and Autism Spectrum Disorder. We will consider the particular difficulties of this group using technology effectively within the context of developing communication and language skills. The course will look at common challenges for these children and, delegates will be equipped with new ways of thinking that will be improve their practice.

Contributors:

Louise Denne is a Behaviour Analyst with 12 years experience working in autism education. She heads up the training and consultancy service for Ambitious about Autism, the national charity for children and young people with autism.

Lyndsey Allen is a Speech and Language Therapist with 6 years experience on a Paediatric Cochlear Implant Programme, she now Co-ordinates the Education Program for the Ear Foundation and has a particular interest in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Times:

The course runs from 10am until 4pm, with coffee and registration at 9.30am.
