Join us in shaping a better future for autistic pupils
Ambitious about Autism is hosting a special event in Westminster, inviting MPs to learn more about autism and how to make the education system fairer for autistic pupils. This event is a way to make sure that decision-makers get to hear real stories from young people who are part of our Ambitious Youth Network. Meeting MPs in person helps them understand the challenges autistic pupils face and how they can help make a positive change.
This event matters
Autistic pupils often face challenges in school from misunderstandings with teachers to a lack of proper support. We want MPs to hear these stories firsthand, so they understand what needs to change. This isn’t only about raising awareness; it’s about making a real impact on the lives of thousands of autistic pupils who deserve a school experience where they feel supported and valued.
James, a member of our Ambitious Youth Network, put it simply:
We need much more help for autistic people.
Rosie added:
MPs need to listen to what young autistic people are saying, we know best what we need, and so often our voices go unheard.
Creating a more understanding education system
When we asked what single change autistic young people would ask MPs to champion, the message from our Ambitious Youth Network was clear — better training for teachers. It’s often felt that many teachers don’t fully understand autism. Our Ambitious Youth Network wants this to change so that pupils feel understood and safe in their classrooms. When teachers are equipped with the right knowledge, they can create a more supportive and inclusive environment.
All teachers need training in autism, and they need to meet people with autism - James, Ambitious Youth Network.
Whilst almost all autistic young people will face challenges in education, they may also see moments of great support. This event will allow them to share their stories with MPs and highlight the good things happening in schools as well as the areas where things can be improved.
Our Ambitious Youth Network member Labeebah shared her experience:
I was lucky to go to a wonderful sixth form with great teachers. But I know many autistic pupils don’t get that kind of support. MPs need to understand how important it is for every school to offer the right kind of support to autistic pupils.
How you can help
You can invite your MP to attend this event. By attending, MPs can hear directly from young people whose lives have been affected by the education system. They’ll learn what has worked well and what still needs to be better, helping them see how they can support autistic students in their communities.
MPs have a duty to listen to young people, especially when those voices are advocating for support in education - Madeline, Ambitious Youth Network Member
Encourage your MP to come along and get involved! The more MPs who join us, the greater impact we can have. Together we can work towards an education system where every pupil is given the chance to thrive.
