Hi from another Deb

Tue 10 Mar 2009 10:58am

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself I'm Debby, and mum to 2 boys with ASD, one J, who is 11 and in mainstream, facing the prospect of moving to Senior School this year, and dreading it.  M, is in Special Ed, and as well as Autism, has ongoing health needs.

Think that's about us,  look forward to getting to know you all

    Hello Debby,

Welcome to the boards.   I know what you mean, the prospect of my son going to high school in a couple of years is something I fear a lot.   I mean, I realize he'll still go in specialized classes in a "normal" school.  But high school brings so many new things in a kids' life.

Thanks for your welcome Marcos, we're currently facing the prospect of going from 2 classes of 26 pupils to a school year of 1200, from staying in one room to having to negotiate a huge school complex, the expectation being that he will get himself successfully from one classroom to another,  my son is a child, with no organisational skills, cant tell left from right, is incredibly vulnerable and open to being taken advantage of and who "shuts down" in the supermarket or in the street, and wanders off because he can't handle large numbers of people and the noise that goes with them!

I have everything crossed that I am worrying about nothing, that he'll sail through it and prove me wrong (please!!) but the thought of him not coping fills me with dread.

Hi Debbie, welcome to the community and thanks for introducing yourself. Maybe you could start a discussion in the Education section (http://www.treehouse.org.uk/forums/education) about moving into a Senior school it might be good to get advice and hear from other people's experiences of this? Anyway I hope you visit the communities often - I look forward to reading your posts. Please note there is not a link to the community from the main part of this website (as we are not launching the community area publicly yet) so please bookmark or favourite the link : http://www.treehouse.org.uk/talk-autism. Let me know if you have any questions - and if you have any feedback on the community please post it up! http://www.treehouse.org.uk/forums/general-forums/feedback-and-help Paula Smile

hi Debby ,welcome on board my son coped quite well moving to senior school as long as he knew his routine of classes once he found his way around the school and had his time table written down on several things incase one got lost ,once my son has been taken somewhere once or twice he knows the route from memory  ,speak to the school about your worries to help put your mind at ease maybe  ,some stagger meal and lesson times so not all the kids are in the corridor at one time ,i hope it does all go well for you x

    Hello Debby and welcome Smile

My little one is only 6, so we've got a way to go before secondary school - I try not to think about it!

Hope it all goes well for you
