Tap to talk - communication devices for non-verbal children

Sat 17 Apr 2010 12:01pm

Hi all,

I saw this link on facebook and thought it may be of interest here. It is called tap to talk and apparently turns nintendo DS's and other everyday equipment into communication devices for non-verbal children...has anyone tried this, or know if it is as good as it sounds??

Here's the link  www.taptotalk.com

    Hi Josie,

To be honest, I didnt realise it had an annual fee...that is disgraceful! Are they linked up to a central computer then which is constantly updated??! Very odd....

    Hi Claire

It looks like you can customise it to the things that your child would want, ie, different food items and you can probably update it as well, if they brought out new categories etc.  Although, of course, this would also necessitate access to the net or trips to the local library (if they allow you to do things like that through their computers).

I do think the idea in principle is a great one, but who needs more financial obligations these days!!

There are soooooooooooooo many things out there we can buy for our kids to try but I always find it quite difficult knowing what things to try and which ones not to bother with.  It would be great if there was sort of like a library that held equipment etc for parents to try and return so we could actually see what does and doesn't work for our kids, a try before you buy scheme!

She loves it as its really improved her little boy's communication

Hi claire sorry it took so long 2 get bk 2 u. What she said was £145 4 ipod touch then go 2 itunes 4 the app proloque 2 go ( which is that pec based application, which u can adapt 2 suit the person in question, their own pic etc & add ur own symbols.. That costs £109 & there is no licence fee. Also the app can connect up 2 five ipods at a time from 1  libriary(  just need 2 update it on pc).   What she did say was is the 16 yr old at the moment using pecs? Because if he is he should find this ok 2 use as its the same principal.      There is also a much cheaper app u can buy if they move on from this & prefer 2 type what they want rather than use pics. I'm sure she said thats around £2 basically he types what he wants 2 say then press speak.   Her little boy started with the 1st 1 then moved on2 the typing 1 as he progressed. She thinks its fantastic & says if u want 2 know anything else I've just 2 let her know.
