Research on Autism in the Media

Tue 17 Dec 2019 2:30pm

Hi everyone,

My name is Ellen and I am new to this community. Currently I live in Pittsburgh, US but I have spent a significant amount of time in the UK because my husband is from there. Together we have a son, Landric, who is 5 years old. At age 3, he was diagnosed with Sotos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, and PDD-NOS.

I am graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh. When my son was diagnosed, I became interested in autism, especially in how the media portrays it. I am currently writing my dissertation on the representation of autistic characters in television shows, and how poor media portrayals can contribute to negative stereotypes about individuals with autism.

As part of my dissertation, I am currently looking for research participants. Specifically, I would like to interview parents of children on the spectrum and ask them about their opinions regarding autism in the media. If you are interested in participating, please click the link below. Your answers are confidential, and no one will have access to your information. If you are 18 years or older and are diagnosed with a form of ASD, you can also take the survey; in that case, just answer the questions about yourself as if you were talking about your child.
