For some of us, our autism is a daily challenge; for others, it's nowhere near the struggle it once was. In this section, you can learn all about autism - what causes it, what it is and, more importantly, what it isn't. And you can hear other young people tell their own stories.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects 1 in 100 people in the UK. It affects the way a person communicates and how they experience the world around them.

Some people find it helpful to distinguish between autism and Asperger’s, but why do we have two terms for what might be the same condition?
The simple answer is that we don’t know for sure what causes autism. There are lots of theories, including ones you've heard about in the media which keep reappearing, despite being disproved by science.
