Why did you choose to apply to be a member of Youth Council?
I applied to be a member of the Youth Council because I wanted to work alongside other autistic people to help change people's perception of autism, and work towards challenging the issues that we commonly encounter.
What are you most proud of doing during your time on Youth Council? Why did you choose to apply to be a member of Youth Council?
My proudest moment during my time on the Youth Council is getting to host a live web interview on Facebook Sophie Walker, the founding leader of the Women's Equality Party. The Youth Council has given me opportunities I never thought I would be able to experience!
Would you recommend Youth Council to other young people? Why?
If you are interested in being part of an accepting and inclusive community and working collaboratively with other autistic people then I would definitely recommend applying to be part of the Youth Council! During my time as a Youth Patron, I have managed to be involved with events that I would have otherwise not been able to access, as well as making valuable connections with other autistic people and witnessing just how diverse and incredible we are as a community.
What skills have you learnt since being a member of Youth Council?
I have learnt that my opinion as a young autistic person is entirely valid and that making a change, however big or small, is entirely possible and achievable. Being a Youth Patron has developed my confidence beyond measure!
Why do you think it is important for young people with autism to have a voice?
I think it's important for young autistic people to have a voice because so many of us simply don't in today's society. The perception of autism presented in the media is often negative and stereotypical, and does not accurately represent us as a whole. This can mean that we are subjected to discrimination or put in difficult situations as a consequence. Common instances of this include autism often being missed or misdiagnosed in girls and women, and autism being dismissed by others because of certain characteristics we may possess. Please apply to the Youth Council and make your voice heard!
