School transport

Many autistic children and young people can’t travel independently to and from school or college, either due to their education setting being far away, or because they face greater difficulties using public transport or walking independently.

Local authorities in England have various duties towards groups of children and young people to make transport arrangements. This includes:

  • children under the age of five
  • children of compulsory school age (typically children between 5-16)
  • young people over the age of 16 (those of ‘sixth form’ age)
  • young people over the age of 16 who are defined as ‘adult learners’
  • challenging transport decisions.
