Autistic Britain’s Got Talent star Travis George becomes our new ambassador
The autistic 23-year-old from Cwmbran in South Wales, was a finalist on the latest series of the hit TV talent show, where he wowed judges with an epic first-audition performance of Stars from the musical Les Misérables.
Before this, Travis appeared in BBC drama, The A Word, which followed the lives of a fictional autistic boy and his family. Travis played Mark, an autistic teenager in the show.
Travis becomes our ambassador after taking part in an inspiring online talk with members of our Ambitious Youth Network – which supports over 700 autistic young people across the nation.
During the online event, Travis, who was diagnosed as autistic aged eight, explained his struggles at school, where he, like many other autistic children and young people, struggled with attendance and felt like he didn’t fit in.
He talked about his big break on The A Word, which led to appearances on other shows such as Casualty and Doctors. He also spoke about how the pandemic affected his career and mental health, before he got the opportunity to appear on Britain’s Got Talent last year.
The event finished with Travis answering questions from other autistic young people who have ambitions to work in TV and theatre, offering words of wisdom about the industry.
Commenting on his appointment as ambassador, Travis said:
"I’m really delighted to be an ambassador for Ambitious about Autism. Like many other autistic young people, I’ve experienced setbacks and challenges in my life– but I’ve also learned the importance of being myself, surrounding myself with people who understand me and finding the thing I love doing the most."
“Ambitious about Autism shares my belief that all autistic young people should have the chance to achieve their ambitions – whatever those might be – and be accepted for themselves. I’m very proud to support this charity!”
Jolanta Lasota, Ambitious about Autism’s Chief Executive, said:
“We’re so thrilled to have Travis join us as an ambassador and to be working closely with him to increase public understanding and acceptance of autism.”
“As an up-and-coming star of stage and screen, Travis is an inspiring role model who has already used his platform to encourage and support other autistic young people to pursue their dreams.”
Next month, Travis will perform at Night of Ambition - our biggest fundraising event.
